Philippines' Ex-President Cory Aquino dies at 76

I woke up early this morning only to hear the sad news that former Philippine President Corazon Cojuangco-Aquino died at around 3 am today, August 1, 2009, as relayed to the media by her son, Senator Benigno "NoyNoy" Aquino III.

Cory was 76 (January 25, 1933 – August 01, 2009).

She died of a cardio-respiratory arrest caused by her colon cancer, which she battled for more than one year.

Aside from Noynoy, Cory has four more children: Maria Elena Aquino-Cruz, Aurora Corazon Aquino-Abellada, Victoria Eliza Aquino-Dee, and Kristina Bernadette "Kris" Aquino, a popular and influential showbiz personality in the country who is married to basketeer James Yap.

Cory was a very important political figure in the Philippines, other than just being an ex-President and the first ever female President in the Philippines and in Asia.

She served as an instrument for the country in obtaining the democracy that the people are enjoying now.

She led the 1986 People Power Revolution which ended Ferdinand E. Marcos' reign as a dictator President.

Just like her husband Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. who was assassinated during Marcos Regime on August 21, 1983, Cory Aquino was also a "hero" for the Filipino people and responsible for shaping not only Philippines history but of the world as well.

They both died in the month of August, the same month when the Philippines celebrates its National Heroes Day.

Cory's death almost falls on the same date of the death of a popular coach in England named Sir Bobby Robson, who also died of cancer on July 31 at the same age of 76.
