81st Academy Awards Nominations (Oscars 2009)

Hollywood's power couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie received their second Academy Award nominations in history during the announcement of the nominations for the 81st Annual Academy Awards on January 22, 2009.

After 13 years, Brad Pitt is nominated once more for an Oscar award via his film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. He was previously nominated as Best Supporting Actor for the movie 12 Monkeys in 1995.

Angelina Jolie is also enjoying her 2nd Oscar nod. But unlike Brad, Angelina has already won an Oscar Best Supporting Actress trophy for the 1999 film Girl, Interrupted.

Other second-time nominees include Robert Downey Jr, Amy Adams, Penelope Cruz and the late Heath Ledger, who is highly expected to win this year for his signature role in The Dark Knight.

First time nominees for an Oscar award are Richard Jenkins, Frank Langella, Mickey Rourke, Josh Brolin, Michael Shannon, Anne Hathaway, Melissa Leo, Viola Davis, Taraji P. Henson.

Meryl Streep has maintained her record for being the most nominated Hollywood actress. Her 2009 nomination is already her 15th.

Sean Penn meanwhile has his 5th nomination and Kate Winslet gets her 6th nod in just a span of 13 years.

Films with the highest number of nominations this year include The Curious Case of Benjamin Button with 13, Slumdog Millionaire with 10, The Dark Knight has 8 and Milk also has eight.
